SPECIAL EVENTS: SPRING 20131. The Bach Festival of Philadelphia presents Back before Bach!
8 pm, Saturday, May 4, 2013 in Philadelphia:
St. Mark’s Church, 1625 Locust Street NOTE: Tickets for this event are available only through the Bach Festival of Philadelphia, www.choralarts.com Bach’s father, Johann Ambrosius Bach was in fact a stadtpfeiffer in the town band of Arnstadt, and his godfather, Sebastian Nagel, a stadtpfeiffer in Gotha. Even his wife, Anna Magdalena, came from a family of winds players, for her father, Johann Caspar Wilcke, was a trumpeter in Zeitz and Weissenfels. Wind bands and the sounds of music performed on wind instruments, then, were part and parcel of J. S.’s young and formative years. Come and hear those sounds as J.S. heard them in settings of popular hits, hymns, motets and dances from the 16 th and 17th centuries, and witness how magically J.S. transformed some of them into his own chorale settings!
